Individualism and collective responses to climate change

چکیده
Abstract This article establishes empirically that a persistent culture of “rugged individualism”, captured by exposure to the American westward-moving frontier from 1790 1890, undermines pro-climate perceptions, environmental performance, and climate change preparedness across counties in United States. It also demonstrates individualism is associated with underperformance at state level, making it more difficult mitigate far-reaching consequences changing conditions. To establish external validity subnational evidence, I employ global sample up 97 countries provide suggestive evidence creates barriers responses worldwide.

Climate Change and Collective Responsibility
Can persons be held morally responsible for harmful consequences that result from the acts or omissions of their nation or society, even if they conscientiously avoid contributing toward those consequences qua individuals? What if those acts and omissions, together with a great many other similar ones committed against the backdrop of social norms that tolerate and even encourage such harmful be...

متن کاملOil shortages, climate change and collective action.
Concerns over future oil scarcity might not be so worrying but for the high carbon content of substitutes, and the limited capacity of the atmosphere to absorb additional CO(2) from burning fuel. The paper argues that the tools of economics are helpful in understanding some of the key issues in pricing fossil fuels, the extent to which pricing can be left to markets, the need for, and design of...
متن کاملDivergence of species responses to climate change
Climate change can have profound impacts on biodiversity and the sustainability of many ecosystems. Various studies have investigated the impacts of climate change, but large-scale, trait-specific impacts are less understood. We analyze abundance data over time for 86 tree species/groups across the eastern United States spanning the last three decades. We show that more tree species have experi...
متن کاملUnderstanding complex biogeographic responses to climate change
Predicting the extent and direction of species' range shifts is a major priority for scientists and resource managers. Seminal studies have fostered the notion that biological systems responding to climate change-impacted variables (e.g., temperature, precipitation) should exhibit poleward range shifts but shifts contrary to that expectation have been frequently reported. Understanding whether ...
